Nuclear Tipping PointAnyone who doesn’t believe that Heaven itself wants Vermont Yankee shuttered in 2012 just hasn’t been paying careful attention. Let’s just quickly run over some recent developments. Five Democrats are running hard for Governor; over the past five years, anti-Yankee activists have slowly made the Democratic primary all but unnavigable for anyone who refuses to commit to decommissioning.

It gets better. Just in the last several days, Entergy all but admitted to misleading the State about the extent and condition of its underground tritium piping, just as a horde of anti-VY activists completed their statewide march on Montpelier.

Maybe best of all, Jim Douglas, the man from Entergy himself, now has no alternative but to attack the Louisiana-based corporation for breaches of truth that have clear consequences for the health and safety of Vermonters.

And why does Douglas have no alternative now?

Because after demolishing the crumbling Crown Point bridge in an eerie parody of his ordinary ribbon-cutting ceremonies, Douglas can’t allow himself to take the fall for a major safety breach at a crumbling nuclear plant. No one wants disintegrating infrastructure as their signature legacy. And while Douglas isn’t on the ballot this time out, his Lieutenant Governor most certainly is, and Dubie will have to answer for the Administration’s eight long years of shielding Yankee from real scrutiny.

Which is to say that Douglas knows Dubie could jelly-leg on the Yankee issue at any moment. Because people are paying attention, suddenly.

All of which leads inexorably to today’s headline in the Free Press: “State Rips Vermont Yankee.” Which was the best Douglas could have hoped for, really. The worst would have been something along the lines of “Entergy Admits Misleading State; Douglas Hastily Disavows Former Ally.”

But as we wrote in the post below, all of this has the vertiginous feel of tipping point, as though we’re all falling into a new era suddenly: post-Douglas, post-Yankee, a genuinely twenty-first century era where we’re not dependent on slide-rule nuclear technology from the 1950’s to power our almost unbelievably powerful desktop computers.

If the collapse of the cooling tower was the First Tipping Point on the Yankee issue, this past week unquestionably marked the Second.

And make no mistake: the Third is coming.

And right on schedule, all sorts of election-year hell is now breaking loose for Entergy: Peter Welch and Bernie Sanders are suddenly focused on the issue, and the Shumlin/Shap tag-team has announced the re-empaneling of the same Vertical Audit oversight team that was fed a dose of bogus information on tritium piping during the original investigation.

The international community has come to the occasion to help the poor people of Haiti and relief efforts have been engaged on a large scale. The UNO, Red Cross and other international organizations are putting in all efforts and resources to minimize the agonies of the Haitian. All the counties of the world have promised a big chunk of donations for the people of Haiti. Haiti death pictures are showing a dismal state of affairs and these are attracting the relief from all over the world.

Danielle Marziano Earlier this week news began spreading of the former Gators quarterback Tim Tebow and his role in a Superbowl ad paid for by well known Christian organization — Focus On the Family. The ad is supposed to highlight the story of Pam Tebow who after becoming ill on the mission field refused doctor’s suggestions to abort her 5th child, Heisman trophy winner Tim Tebow. The CBS network has already approved the script for the ad which is set to air during this year’s Superbowl and expected to promote a theme of “Celebrating Family and Life.”

Today, SI.com reported that a coalition of women’s groups called on CBS to scrap its plan to broadcast the ad during the Super Bowl featuring college football star Tim Tebow and his mother, which is by nature likely to convey an anti-abortion message.

The New York-based Women’s Media Center was coordinating the protest with backing from the National Organization for Women, the Feminist Majority and other groups.

“An ad that uses sports to divide rather than to unite has no place in the biggest national sports event of the year — an event designed to bring Americans together,” said Jehmu Greene, president of the Women’s Media Center.

There has also been criticism from current sports journalists who oppose the discussion of abortion being brought to the public on Superbowl Sunday. A columnist for CBSSports.com, Gregg Doyel, also objected to the CBS decision to show the ad, specifically because it would air on Super Sunday.

“If you’re a sports fan, and I am, that’s the holiest day of the year,” he wrote. “It’s not a day to discuss abortion. For it, against it, I don’t care what you are. On Super Sunday, I don’t care what I am. Feb. 7 is simply not the day to have that discussion.”

The controversy over the ad was raised Sunday when Tebow met with reporters.

“I know some people won’t agree with it, but I think they can at least respect that I stand up for what I believe,” Tebow said. “I’ve always been very convicted of it (his views on abortion) because that’s the reason I’m here, because my mom was a very courageous woman. So any way that I could help, I would do it.”

I’ve never been a fan of the Gators, which usually put me rooting against Tim Tebow for the last few years. But on this issue, I’ll be the first to stand with Tim Tebow and argue that if given the opportunity he should not have to censor the story of his life for people who don’t like the message it may convey.

Tim Tebow should not have to be silenced simply because telling his story implies that his life was sincerely valuable to his mother.

No one to my knowledge has begun to cry out against godaddy.com’s sexually provocative commercials set to air during the Superbowl, which founder Bob Parsons claims will be the “hottest” ads yet.

When someone does a good deed, should they be forced never to tell the story simply because there may be someone who presented with the same situation acted differently? This isn’t about whether you believe Roe vs. Wade should be overturned or not, this about whether or not we should be permitted to tell a good story.

If my life is imperfect in an area, is it OK for me to censor all people who have achieved success in that area of life? Am I allowed to close my ears to anyone who hasn’t lived their life just as I have lived mine? No, I don’t believe so.

So given the opportunity to tell his story, with whatever message it may by nature convey, Tim Tebow, tell your story. It is in fact divisive, but so is the gospel of Jesus Christ. The gospel divides the believers from the un-believers, and the result of our beliefs is not a matter of option, but one of either eternal peace or eternal damnation.

But I’ll stop now, my language just got highly divisive and unfit to be told in public, and especially not during the Superbowl.

Well, at least he's up front about that. Gotta give him credit there.

1. Involve at least three cast members (and preferably more) who each participate whole-heartedly in singing, dancing, or both
2. Depend on spontaneity. At the least, the singing/dancing is unscheduled. (E.g., in Sister Act, the choir’s performances would not be eligible; if the nuns had broken into a retro-disco sequence during vespers, however, that might be eligible)
3. Consist of a discrete episode featuring a single song
4. Bond the participants

4) The next quote is a reminder that Christmas was viewed differently back then than we think of it today. But of course many of today’s Christmas traditions date from the 19th century or later:

Friday I witnessed one of the most amazing and wonderful moments of my 21-year reporting career. It came after an early morning flight to Detroit where we rented a car, met up with a freelance crew and drove to a suburban mobile-home park. I felt like Ed McMahon or the guy from Publishers Clearing House with cameras behind me as I approached the front steps of a double-wide trailer in a well-kept yard. I knocked and saw a woman inside rush toward the door. I confirmed her name and introduced myself and held up my Blackberry with Robin Hood 702 on the speakerphone. bollywood91.com

“Can you hear me?” He asked. “Get your husband out there… I want to speak to him too!”

Her husband appeared with their young daughter in his arms and Robin Hood broke the news.

Now she's just glad he's okay and says she won't let it happen again. The child, Hayden Wright, was found around 1:45 am Tuesday, wandering the streets of his neighborhood. In a police reports, officers said he was wearing a little girl's dress and drinking a beer. The police report says the child had to be taken to the hospital to be treated for alcohol consumption.

April Wright said, "Biggest concern was him being out there, getting kidnapped, getting run over, the alcohol, having to have his stomach pumped."

Wright says she woke up that night at 1:45 am and panicked when she found Hayden was gone. She says she put safety devices on all the doors so her kids couldn't get out, but Hayden was able to break the safety device off the doorknob and get outside.

Once out, Wright says her four year old followed his father's footsteps and was found on Blue Spruce Road, drinking.

"He runs away trying to find his father," she said. "He wants to get in trouble so he can go to jail because that's where his daddy is."

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office report says Hayden rang the doorbell a few houses down and the neighbor answered, finding the child holding a partially consumeed 12-ounce beer.

Wright said, "He got it out of my father's cooler in the back and how he got it open I don't understand because it was one of those tab beers."

But it doesn't stop there. The report said Hayden then snuck into a neighbor's house through an unlocked front door, and stole five wrapped Christmas gifts. One was a girl's brown dress which Hayden was wearing when police found him.

"Going to the neighbor's house and taking their presents, very embarrassing," said April.

She admits she was not just embarrassed, but scared, and rushed to the hospital that night with Hayden. She said she tries to be a good mother and loves her son, but now feels like a failure.

"Kids do things like this and it's out of your control, you can do the best you can as a mother, everyone makes mistakes, it was an honest mistake," she said.

Wright did meet with child protective services today who told her she will get to keep custody of Hayden.

Baraboo Assistant Fire Chief Tom Goethel said the woman was climbing off-trail boulders on the east bluff near Devil's Doorway with her daughter and boyfriend when the accident took place.

Rescue crews from Baraboo Fire Department, Delton Fire and Prairie Du Sac who were receiving training at Devil's Lake responded to the nearby accident.

The rescue began at about 4 p.m. and lasted two and a half hours.

Michelle Widell of Rockford was discharged from St. Clare Hospital Monday after a weekend hiking accident at Devils' Lake Campground.

Bob Wilson of the Baraboo District Ambulance Service said a call was received at 3:46 p.m. on Sunday after Widell sustained injuries climbing the rocks on the park's east side.

Rescue workers worked into the night, using lighting to help them safely extricate Widell during the lengthy evacuation. She arrived for treatment at St. Clare at 7:30 that evening. Hospital officials would not comment on her condition or injuries sustained.

The infamous iron sign bearing the Nazis' cynical slogan "Arbeit Macht Frei" that spanned the main entrance to the former Auschwitz death camp was stolen before dawn Friday, Polish police said.The wide iron sign — across a gate at the former Nazi death camp in southern Poland where more than 1 million people died during World War II — was removed by being unscrewed on one side and torn off on the other, police spokeswoman Katarzyna Padlo said.

She said the sign — bearing the German words for "Work Sets You Free" — disappeared from the Auschwitz memorial between 3:30 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Police have launched an intensive hunt, with criminal investigators and search dogs sent to the grounds of the vast former death camp, whose barracks, watchtowers and ruins of gas chambers still stand as testament to the atrocities inflicted by Nazi Germany on Jews, Gypsies, and others.

Museum spokesman Pawel Sawicki called the theft a "desecration" and said it was shocking that the tragic history of the site did not stop the thieves.

"We believe that the perpetrators will be found soon and the inscription will be returned to its place," Sawicki told The Associated Press.

Padlo said there are currently no suspects but police are pursuing several theories. A 5,000-zloty ($1,700) reward has been offered to anyone who can help track down the perpetrators.

An exact replica of the sign — made by the museum after World War II — was immediately hung in place of the missing original to fill in the empty space, but all visitors were being informed about the theft, Sawicki said. The museum had the replica made to hang when restoration work has been required on the original, Sawicki said.

The original sign was made in the summer of 1940 by non-Jewish Polish inmates of Auschwitz in an iron workshop at the camp, Sawicki said.

Poland's Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich said he had trouble imagining who would steal the sign and condemned the theft.

"If they are pranksters, they'd have to be sick pranksters, or someone with a political agenda. But whoever has done it has desecrated world memory," he told the AP.

"Auschwitz has to stand intact because without it, we are without the world's greatest reminder — physical reminder — of what we are capable of doing to each other," Schudrich said.

The slogan "Arbeit Macht Frei" was also used at the entrances to other Nazi camps, including Dachau and Sachsenhausen. The long curving sign at Auschwitz, is, however, perhaps the best known.

Between 1940 and 1945, more than 1 million people, mostly Jews, were killed or died of starvation and disease while carrying out forced labor at the camp, which the Nazis built in occupied Poland.

Today the site is one of the main draws in the region for visitors from abroad and Polish students, with more than 1 million visitors per year.

However, the barracks and other structures, which were not built to last many decades, are in a state of massive disrepair 65 years after the camp was liberated by the Soviet army, and Polish authorities have been struggling to find funds to carry out conservation work. This week, Germany pledged euro60 million ($87 million) to a new endowment that will fund long-term preservation work — half the estimated amount that officials with the Auschwitz memorial museum say is needed.

So I finally was able to catch up and watch Jersey Shore this weekend and needless to say it lived up to all the hype and more. I mean every character is damn near perfect. I’ve even made the First Lady start calling me “The Situation” just for the hell of it. But as much as I enjoyed the first episode it was all overshadowed by the upcoming scenes when Snookie gets coldcocked in the face by a dude. I literally have to take sleep medicine now before I go to bed now just so I can relax and not think about how excited I am for it. Because I’m telling you right now this is destined to go down as one of the greatest moments in the history of television. Like 20 years from now people are going to be talking about where they were when JFK got assisinated and Snookie got smashed in the face. It’s going to be that important to modern pop culture and I’m having a hard time concentrating on anything else until it happens. So please MTV I’m begging for you to let this be in the next episode so I can get on with my life. Because I don’t know how much longer I can wait.
